Samantha Velasquez Rivertte
Dean's Research Scholar
MSU College of Natural Science
More about me:
What is your major and anticipated graduation?
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Pharmacology & Toxicology, May 2026
How did you decide to attend MSU?
I dedicated 11 years of my life to tennis, with the dream of continuing my journey at a U.S. university. I applied to several Division 1 tennis programs, while also submitting regular applications to universities like MSU. When I was accepted to MSU and awarded an academic scholarship, I saw a new path open—one that allowed me to pursue my passion for science instead.
How did you select your major?
Witnessing Peru’s devastating COVID-19 death toll—the highest in the world at one point—was a sobering wake-up call. It underscored the urgent need for greater diversity of perspectives within the scientific community. Without it, our ability to address today’s complex health challenges remains deeply limited.
Can you describe your research?
I study how certain bacteria use a special enzyme to switch between two forms of lactate (known as the Lar pathway), which helps them survive in changing environments. By testing different versions of this enzyme, I'm helping uncover how it works—knowledge that could one day support the development of new antibiotics.
What is the societal impact of your research?
Since the Lar pathway is a survival toolkit for bacteria, understanding its structure and function could contribute to the development of novel antibiotics targeting bacterial survival pathways
How has your undergraduate experience been impacted by research experience?
Getting involved in research at MSU has become my central passion over the past years. It’s given me the confidence to see myself as someone capable of making meaningful contributions to science through hands-on, real-world inquiry. These experiences have inspired me to pursue academic and professional opportunities on a global scale, seeking out connections and collaborations with respected faculty and leaders in my field.
Of everything you have experienced at MSU, what has surprised you the most/what is something you never expected?
I was surprised to learn that MSU is not only a major research institution but also strongly encourages undergraduate students to get involved in that research.
Plans after graduation?
PhD in Molecular Pharmacology.
How important is this scholarship to you personally and to your future career?
This scholarship will play a crucial role in expanding my opportunities to engage in research, strengthening my skills while laying the groundwork for a future Ph.D. It will help shape a path where I can make meaningful contributions to my field.
