Murtaza Barkarar
In my own words
More about me
What is your hometown?
Dubai, United Arab Emirates
What is your major and anticipated graduation?
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology/Biotechnology, Spring 2025
How did you decide to attend MSU?
I was enticed by the fascinating undergraduate research opportunities facilitated by MSU along with a very generous scholarship which came in handy as an international student. Additionally, I found MSU’s biochemistry program a really good fit for professional aspirations and the university also offered an unparalleled culture, with a student body that exudes determination and kindness.
How did you select your major?
I wanted to pursue Biotechnology given its breadth, accommodating several diverse interests I had, whilst Biochemistry in itself provides essential foundation for understanding the chemistry within living organisms. A large number of health issues faced today either involved disruption in our body’s biochemistry and we often try to incorporate biochemistry in other organisms to resolve these issues. Therefore, the major with its broad utility presented itself as the ideal major for my career interests.
Can you describe your research?
My current research incorporates investigation of wood, which is composed of plant secondary cell wall, using computational tools. Our research is trying to modify the chemical nature of the secondary cell wall to obtain wood with greater strength and also greater resistance to fungal diseases such as brown decay.
What is the societal impact of your research?
This research has valuable implications on softwood, instilling greater fungal resistance and also providing more mechanical strength, increasing durability of wood. Additionally, this research will also help preserve lignin and cellulose in secondary cell wall, which can be individually extracted and used in the process of generating biofuel.
How has your undergraduate experience been impacted by this experience?
My undergraduate experience has been inexplicably enhanced due to my research experience. It has allowed me to meet with others that share similar interests, present my findings at external conferences and learn about advances made in the field. Additionally, this experience has aided my academic journey, as the opportunity to apply these concepts has made me more curious when learning about different theoretical ideas.
Of everything you have experienced at MSU, what has surprised you the most/what is something you never expected?
The diversity of backgrounds and thoughts pleasantly surprised me. During class discussions, I often found a variety of perspectives, providing a wholistic understanding for each topic. This has enabled me to challenge my own preconceptions and hold opinions that are more considerate of a greater variety of factors.
If your little brother/sister was coming to MSU, what is one piece of advice you would give them?
Be proactive and try to explore different opportunities the campus has to offer. Don’t let anybody else decide your path, do what makes you happy.
Person/People who have inspired you?
My parents, they taught me how to persevere through challenging times, and encouraged me to pursue things that make me curious
Person you would most like to meet (living or dead)?
Leonardo Da Vinci
On a Saturday afternoon, what would we likely find you doing?
Tuning in for a sports event with my friends, cheering and bickering with each other.
What major research breakthrough of the next decade (not your own, but overall) do you think we will see?
3-D printing will grow in stature, securing itself as the cornerstone of manufacturing industry.
Plans after graduation?
I plan to pursue a PhD in biophysics and/or pharmaceutical sciences.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Enrolled in a Graduate program within the realm of biological sciences, hopefully defending my dissertation.
Where do you see yourself in 25 years
Working as a research scientist, working to eliminate some of necessary societal inconveniences with scientific approach, either in academia or at an industry level.
What are some of your favorite MSU memories?
Going around the campus on the spin electric scooter during the freshman year.
What is the Importance of this scholarship to you personally and to your future career?
I am really interested in science communication and hope to enhance my skills in this field by leveraging this platform. Additionally, I would love to connect with the alumni and showcase my time at the university. I would also love to expand my network, and perhaps create greater awareness regarding research, both amongst alumni and my fellow undergraduate students.
