Major and anticipated graduation: Human Biology and Kinesiology, spring 2025

How did you decide to attend MSU: I felt very wanted by MSU. I was offered a research position through the Professorial Assistantship program before ever stepping foot on campus and received the Distinguished First-year Scholarship in the Alumni Distinguished Scholarship competition. Faculty and staff from the Kinesiology department and Honors College happily answered my questions and even invited me on a tour of campus and Kinesiology laboratories before I chose a school to attend.

How did you select your major: I am interested in pursuing a career in medicine, with a focus on sports medicine. Human biology and kinesiology bridge the disciplines of sports and health together in a way that prepares me for professional school. I am particularly interested in exercise physiology.

Describe your research: My research utilizes molecular physiology techniques to determine mechanisms by which undernutrition in childhood causes chronic disease and if exercise can be an effective treatment.

What is the societal impact of your research: 150 million children under the age of 5 suffer from undernutrition and are therefore at an increased risk of chronic disease (cardiovascular disease, Type II diabetes, etc.). If exercise can be found to be an effective therapeutic, then all these individuals may have improved health outcomes and live longer, healthier lives.

How has your undergraduate experience been impacted by this experience: My undergraduate experience has been significantly enriched by the opportunities presented within my lab. Not only have I honed my professional skills, but I've also fostered a strong camaraderie with my colleagues. Throughout this journey, I've acquired a plethora of new biological and research techniques that will undoubtedly shape my future career. These newfound skills have enabled me to present my findings at conferences and engage with experts in the exercise physiology field, further solidifying my passion and commitment to this area of study.

Of everything you have experienced at MSU, what has surprised you the most/what is something you never expected: Two things surprised me the most. Firstly, I never expected to work with animals, but here I am, exercising mice on treadmills. Secondly, I would never have expected to stand in the Red Cedar River during class time. I had a wonderful experience collecting data on fish in the river as a part of my biology laboratory class and really getting my hands dirty.

If your little brother/sister was coming to MSU, what is one piece of advice you would give them: Get involved. Find something that makes you happy outside of class and join a student organization that incorporates it. I have met so many wonderful people and so many of my friends through various clubs that involve my hobbies.

Person/People who have inspired you: My parents inspire me every day through their journey from immigrants needing to learn the English language and support their families to having successful careers in their respective fields.

Person I’d most like to meet (living or dead): Steve Carell.

On a Saturday afternoon, you’ll likely find me: Studying or supporting the MSU hockey team at Munn Ice Arena.

Major research breakthrough of the next decade (not your own, but overall): Using artificial intelligence to better diagnose and treat medical conditions.

Plans after graduation: I plan on taking a year to do research, then attend medical school.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years: Finishing medical school and applying for residencies.

Where do you see yourself in 25 years: Working as either an emergency room physician or orthopedic surgeon. I hope to have a family and live by a body of water.

What are some of your favorite MSU memories: Watching the MSU hockey team winning the Big Ten regular season and tournament championship was electrifying. Getting to meet interim president Teresa Woodruff and petting service dogs also holds a special place in my heart. Finally, I cherish the time I have spent with my friends and going on all our crazy adventures.

Importance of this scholarship to you personally and to your future career: This scholarship gives me the amazing opportunity to meet fascinating alumni and expand my personal network outside of the university. I am excited to meet other like-minded individuals and share my research perspective at MSU.
